Phil Hughes was coming off one of his better starts of the year and was hoping to build on that, in a season that has had little consistency for the once highly regarded starter. On this night however Hughes struggled to find the zone, walking five and allowing three runs before being yanked in the fifth inning in the Yankees 5-2 loss.

Hughes continues to be burned by the long ball, this time as Brandon Moss hit a two run shot to stake Oakland out to a 2-0 lead. In the fifth Hughes was taken out after a John Jaso double made the score 3-0.

The Yankees were able to chip away in the sixth and seventh innings, as a sac fly by Mark Teixeira and a single by Jayson Nix brought them to within 3-2. However Moss struck again in the eighth, going yard for the 11th time this year with a shot to center off of Joba Chamberlain.

Chamberlain also served up an RBI single to Jaso, making the score 5-2. Grant Balfour came in and got his 17th save of the season to preserve the victory. The Yankees fell to three games back of Boston for the division lead, while Oakland has jumped to one game in front of Texas for the lead in their division.

These two teams square off at 3:35 on the east coast Thursday, with Hiroki Kuroda going up against Jarrod Parker.
