Giants defensive back Walter Thurmond III came over from the Super Bowl Champions Seattle Seahawks this offseason. He tore his pectoral muscle in the Giants loss to the Arizona Cardinals 14-25 Sunday. He is scheduled to undergo surgery tomorrow and will miss the remainder of the season.
“You take a guy who came here, was excited about being here, had shown the ability to run around and be in the right position, made a really nice tackle, a couple of tackles yesterday where he really broke on the ball and did a nice job,” coach Tom Coughlin said. “We’re going to obviously miss Walter, but we have some other guys that have played and played well. McBride has played well last year, so he’s going to have to step up and play well again.”
Thurmond was a huge piece for the Giants defense, a guy who could play the slot position with much needed experience. He was a favorite amongst players, coaches and staff. Trumaine McBride stepped in for Thurmond in Sundays game, but as of right now there is no word on who will take his place this week vs Houston.
Coughlin was asked if Giants safety Antrel Rolle could be considered for the move.
“It’s always a consideration,” Coughlin said. “He’s always ready to do that. It may not be preferred, but we’ll see.
“It’s very unfortunate. Walter, we were looking forward to him being a great player for us in our secondary. Like I said, it’s very unfortunate but we have to find a way to move on as professionals. I think we have guys that are going to step in. Right now this week, it’s going to be Trumaine McBride and I have all the confidence in the world in him,” said Rolle.
He however doesn’t believe he will be move to the slot anytime soon by saying, “Well, right now we just have Trumaine there, so that’s the game plan right now. Like I said, we have all the confidence in the world in him.”
