The Rangers Get Their Man

After months of speculation, the New York Rangers have finally traded for Rick Nash.  Ever since the trade deadline last season, Rangers General Manager Glen Sather has been trying to pry away Nash from the Columbus Blue Jackets.  At the time, the asking price was too much.  The Blue Jackets wanted a lot in return for their star scorer and if the Rangers wanted to trade they would have to part with key players like Michael Del Zotto, Derek Stepan, Brandon Dubinsky, and rookie sensation Chris Kreider.  Glen Sather decided that it was not time to pull the trigger on a deal so he waited until the off-season.  Rumors increased that the deal might get sealed at the NHL Draft, but that came and went without any excitement.  Finally both teams have agreed to a deal.

In the deal, the Rangers received Rick Nash, defenseman Steve Delisle and a conditional third round pick. For this trade to work, the Rangers had to give up Brandon Dubinsky, Artem Anisimov, Tim Erixon and a first round draft pick.  Although they gave up a lot, this was quite a steal for the Rangers.  Brandon Dubinksy was not living up to his contract and Artem Anisimov and Tim Erixon were expendable, especially when you can get an elite scorer like Nash.  Kudos goes to Glen Sather for keeping Michael Del Zotto, Derek Stepan, and Chris Kreider away from being put in the trade.

Rick Nash is a perfect fit for the Rangers. He is one of the best goal scorers in the game.  Everyone knows how the Rangers suffered last season, scoring goals and captializing on the power play.  Nash will be put on the first line with Brad Richards and Captain Ryan Callahan, which should give a boost to their scoring opportunities.  Placing Nash on the first line also helps because Marion Gaborik will miss the opening months of the season. Gaborik is out after having torn labrum surgery. This trade has given the Rangers the opportunity to repeat as Conference leaders and will definitely make them favorites to get to the Stanley Cup.
