St. Johns Falls to Providence In Quarterfinals

NEW YORK CITY – It has often times been said throughout the season that the Red Storm go as far as D’Angelo Harrison goes. Thursday afternoon was proof that this statement has some validity. The Red Storm had their Big East Championship hopes dashed by the Providence Friars, 74-57. Madison Square Garden as their home floor, proved to have no advantage as the Friars dismantled the Red Storm.

Harrison, who is one of 3 Red Storm players to score over 2,000 points, was held to just 7 points on just 3/15 shooting. The only St. Johns player to score in double digits was Rysheed Jordan who led the Red Storm with 18 points off the bench.

Providence played tough defense which was the key factor to them advancing in the Big East Tournament. The Friars held St.John’s to just 57 points on 31% (18-58) shooting from the field. Providence was led by Senior, LaDontae Henton who finished with 20 points and 12 rebounds. He was one of three Friar players to finish in double figures. Kris Dunn had 17 points and 11 assists, while Ben Bentil added 14 points and 13 rebounds as well.

Providence will move on to play the top seeded Villanova Wildcats Friday night, while St. John’s will hope to get an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament.
