Rangers Fall to Crosby’s Penguins

Any time the New York Rangers and the Pittsburgh Penguins play each other, it is always an event. This game marked the return of All-Star Sidney Crosby to the Penguins lineup. He had been sidelined with injuries and was making his return tonight. The Penguins had a big advantage adding Crosby and Kris Letang, who was also coming back from injury. As these guys were returining for the Penguins, the Rangers were still without Ryan Callahan, Michael Del Zotto and Henrik Lundqvist. The Rangers would have to rely on their new frontline consisting of Marion Gaborik, Brad Richards and Carl Hagelin. This line has been having quite the success over the last few games.

The 1st period saw the Penguins take a 1-0 lead, when Matt Cooke scored a goal that deflected off Stu Bickel as he was trying to save it from going in the net. Later on in the period the Rangers would tie the game at 1-1, when Carl Hagelin scored a goal. The Rangers were attacking the net and attacking with force when Hagelin finally put the puck in the net. The Rangers were playing a very physical game and the fans were loving it. However, that would change in the 2nd period.

The Penguins scored two quick goals by Evgeni Malkin and Matt Cooke, who scored his 2nd of the game. The Penguins had a 3-1 lead. The momentum was in their favor but Marion Gaborik put a stall to that with a goal of his own, bringing the Rangers to within one as the score was 3-2 at the end of the 2nd period. The goal marked Gaborik’s 35th of the season. He’s had 8 goals in his last 12 games. Pittsburgh would pull away in the 3rd with two more goals. One goal was by Chris Kunitz just as their power play was ending. The other was by Pascal Dupuis. The fans at the Garden were silenced and the Penguins went on to win 5-2.

This was a rough game for the Rangers considering that they were missing 3 of their stars. Maybe the Rangers can get some pay back when their stars return. If they do, it would be in the playoffs as both teams look like they are in. Next up for the Rangers are the Colorado Avalanche on Saturday at Madison Square Garden.
