Spurs 102   Nets 75

The Nets have not won a regular season game in San Antonio since January 22nd 2002. Tonight they played the Spurs with both teams looking to avoid a 0-2 start to the season. The Nets lost their season opener to the Bulls on Wednesday night and the Spurs lost to the OKC Thunder.

This game was a tale of two halves. The Nets played a great first half and the second half was one to forget. The Nets kept pace with the Spurs in the first quarter. They were down by only four points at the end of the period and seemed like they were looking to compete with one of the premier teams in the league.

Brook Lopez who is the focal point of the offense had 4 points and two assists in the period. The second quarter saw some more success for the Nets offensively and defensively, they led by ten points at one point and only had 3 turnovers in the first half. This game turned around near the end of the second quarter as the Spurs went into the half with momentum after Manu Ginobli hit a buzzer beating 3pointer to end the quarter. The Nets led 47-42 going into the intermission.

The third period began the downfall for the Nets tonight; they were outscored 34-17 and had 7 turnovers. The Spurs came out of the break with a renewed tenacity on defense. Kawhi Leonard had the task of guarding Joe Johnson and held him to only one field goal in the game. Johnson did not score his first field goal until early in the 4th quarter. Leonard finished with a double double while locking down Joe Johnson. He tallied 16 points and 10 rebounds. The former finals MVP struggled in the first half but played great defensively throughout the game.

The newly acquired LaMarcus Aldridge also had a double double and finished the night with 10 points and 11 rebounds. Spurs fixtures Tony Parker and Tim Duncan each finished with double digit figures in scoring and led the Spurs tonight.

For the Nets Brook Lopez had 17 points 4 assists and 3 rebounds. Brook was the anchor for the Nets offensively however the second half was just a disaster for the team. They managed to only score 28 points in the half and lost the game decisively 102-75.

The Nets needed Joe Johnson to step up, especially with the departure of Deron Williams. He has to be more aggressive on the offensive end. He must demand the ball and use his size to his advantage in the post. Jarret Jack finished the game with 12 points and 7 assists however he shot 5-13 and never really controlled the game for the Nets. The Nets need to find their offensive identity.

When asked about the 2nd half collapse coach Hollins stated that the depth of the Spurs coupled with the 7 turnovers in the 3rd and the energy and aggressiveness on the defensive end led the Nets to a disappointing loss.

The Nets have a quick turnaround as they face the Memphis Grizzlies tomorrow and look to pick up their first win in the 2015-2016 NBA season.
