BROOKLYN – The Brooklyn Nets prior to Sunday afternoon’s contest against the Detroit Pistons, were on a 3 game losing streak with losses to the Miami Heat, Toronto Raptors and Cleveland Cavaliers. They sat with a 10-15 record looking to turn things around and get over .500, and set themselves up in the weak Eastern Conference.

Against the Pistons with no Deron Williams, we saw a team that was focused and poised to win coming right out of the gate. The Nets were moving the ball around well, and aggressive in taking advantage of scoring opportunities. They also did a great job of not allowing Detroit to do what they wanted to offensively, and forcing tough shots. Most of those contested shots came from the three point line; Detroit shot 33% from behind the arc (9-27).

Offensively, Brooklyn did anything they wanted to and kept the lead for most of the contest until Detroit made a late push and got the game to just a point. Clutch free throws from Kevin Garnett helped to keep the game out of reach and give Brooklyn a 110-105 win.

Brooklyn had 6 players score in double digits, and had 29 team assists. This is very good to see since they were without their star point guard Williams. Mason Plumlee led the Nets with 21 points and 12 rebounds. Joe Johnson also had a good game adding 16 points and 7 assists.

Following the game, Detroit cut their small forward Josh Smith. Smith had career lows since coming over to play with the Pistons from his former team the Atlanta Hawks. Reports have the new free agent heading to Houston in a starting role.

Brooklyn’s next opponent would be the Denver Nuggets on Tuesday night, for the 2nd game in a row at the Barclays. The Nets were looking to start a winning streak, building off of their win against the struggling Pistons.

Denver came ready to play, and led for a good bit of the game. They were led by Ty Lawson, who played lights out. Lawson was 10-20 from the field, and finished with 29 points and 9 assists. Kenneth Faried also hurt the Nets with his physical play and dominance in the paint. He finished with a double double (20 points, 14 rebounds).

The Nets would eventually take the game in the 4th quarter, behind strong play from Mason Plumlee who had a double double (19 points, 13 rebounds) of his own. He has been easily the Nets most consistent player, and is starting to make his case for one of the top big men in the league right now. The Nets high scorer was Joe Johnson who finished with 27 points, and key buckets late in the game to propel the Nets to a 102-96 win. This improved the Nets record to 12-15, as they inch closer to reaching the .500 mark.

In the absence of Williams, its good to see that the quality of basketball has not fallen in Brooklyn. The Nets are playing hard for the entire duration of games, and most importantly making the plays they need down the stretch to win games. Thier next opponent will be the Celtics in Boston on Christmas Day.
