Mets Weekend Review: pitching and offense falter as Mets get swept in Miami

After a convincing four game sweep of their crosstown rivals, the Mets headed down to last  place Miami with a full head of steam. However the Marlins were not ready roll over for New York and instead delivered a three game beat down, outscoring the Mets 24-8 over three games.

On Friday, top Marlins prospect Jacob Turner made his season debut by throwing seven shutout innings. Mets’ starter Shaun Marcum pitched six scoreless innings before giving up four runs in the seventh, a number the Mets could not match as they eventually would fall 5-1.

Saturday saw the Mets once again get shutdown by a young Marlins arm, this time it was Jose Fernandez tossing the seven shutout innings, en route to the victory. The Mets fell behind right from the first inning and would eventually trail 8-0 through seven before eventually going down 8-1. Jonathon Niese was supposed to start but was scratched because of a shoulder injury. Collin McHugh got the start instead.

The final game of this series featured Mets ace Matt Harvey, however the rookie pitched far below his normal standards. It was his worst start of the year as he allowed four runs in five innings, surrendering 10 hits to the Marlins. Harvey would not end up taking the loss though as the Mets fought back from an early 4-1 deficit to tie the game at four on an Ike Davis homer before taking the lead on a Marlon Byrd RBI single.

This time it was the Mets bullpen that faltered giving up the lead in the 6th and getting tagged for runs in the 7th and 8th that put the Mets in an 11-6 hole that they would not recover from. Scott Rice got the loss for the Mets in his two thirds of an inning pitched.
