Mets allow seven unearned runs in 9-2 loss to Cardinals

A Daniel Murphy error at first base led to a six run fourth inning for the Cardinals, who defeated the Mets 9-2 Tuesday evening behind six strong innings from rookie Michael Wacha.

The big inning was capped off by a three run homer by Allen Craig off Mets starter Jeremy Hefner, who fell to 1-6 on the year with the loss. Shane Robinson added a homer in the ninth to cap off the Cardinals’ scoring.

The Mets actually got out to a lead in this one, as Omar Quintanilla hit a solo homer in the first before a Marlon Byrd sac fly gave the Mets a 2-0 advantage. The Mets were silenced after that as Michael Wacha and the Cards bullpen combined to allow just five Mets hits.

This time last year Wacha was pitching for Texas A&M University. This was his third start of his career and his first major league win. He walked three and struck out four in this outing.

With sloppy play and inconsistency with the bat the Mets continue to look like a team with no intentions on making a playoff run. The Mets are hoping Dillon Gee can help the team bounce back with a much needed strong performance on Wednesday against an excellent Cardinals lineup.
