On the last day of free agency the Rangers made a big splash in acquiring Martin St. Louis from the Tampa Bay Lighting for captain Ryan Callahan and picks. Trading away the captain of your team isn’t really an ideal thing to do but negotiations didn’t get done in time and the Rangers got in return what they think is a player that makes there team better, and certainly more offensively potent.

St. Louis failed to record a point but his presence was felt on almost every shift. He was placed right where Callahan was in the lineup alongside Brad Richards and Carl Hagelin. The chemistry seemed as if they had been played with each other all year, although St Louis and Richards had played together in Tampa Bay.

Tyler Bozak got the scoring started early in the second period on a penalty shot was awarded to him. Dominic Moore seemed to lift his stick at the last moment but penalty was called none the less.

Toronto doubled the lead early in the third again after Nazem Kadri was left alone to the left of Henrik Lundqvist and buried home a rebound. Shortly after the Rangers finally got a bit lucky while shorthanded when Ryan McDonagh fire a shot that was going about 10 feet wide but deflected in off of Dion Phaneuf’s skate and pulling the blueshirts within one. During the same penalty kill, Dominic Moore was sprung loose and scored glove side on Bernier to tie the game at two.

In overtime, Tyler Bozak played hero when he scored his second goal of the game after a great feed from Phil Kessel.

The Rangers first win for St. Louis will have to wait at least until Friday when they visit Carolina.

Did You Know? : The Leafs have given up 2 shorthanded goals on the same power-play twice in the past week. The Rangers will not name another captain for the remainder of the year.
