MANHATTAN, New York

The New York Liberty came out on top last night against the Indiana Fever, with an ending score of 79-86 in the Liberty’s favor. Layshia Clarendon (IND) finished with a career-high, 14 points and 5 rebounds, while Tina Charles (NYL) lead the Liberty with 21 points, 4 rebounds, and 4 assist.

Clarendon started the game off by knocked down the first shot of the game to get the Fever started. But the Liberty added 7 points to the scored board before letting the Fever score again. The Liberty fought back getting their highest lead of the quarter at the six-minute mark making the score 14-8 after a jump shot by Charles. The Fever won the first half with an ending score of 22-20. There was a total of two lead changes, the Liberty had a scoring drought for almost three minutes; allowing the Fever to take the lead for the rest of the quarter.

The second quarter was not much different from the first, the Liberty continued to stay behind until the 2:30 mark; where they were ahead by one for less than a minute; giving the lead back to the Fever for the rest of the first half.

The Liberty dominated the third quarter, only allowing the Fever to score 13 points. Changing the dynamic of the game, which the Fever had control of in the first half. “We just talked about some of the things we were seeing out there, sometimes it takes a half to really see what the defense is doing and what they’re giving you. We just really talked about that, talked about picking up our energy defensively and we just came out and executed it” says Liberty guard, Tanisha Wright who contributed 12 points and 5 assists, to the win.

“We had small breakdowns in the third quarter. When they go on those runs, we have to nip it in the bud quick, its a game of runs, we have to keep them short, four to six points” says Fever guard Layshia Clarendon after the loss, who scored her career high against the Liberty.

Charles, who came out slow in the first half stepped her game up to add 13 points in the second half. “…I feel like my presence wasn’t felt as it should be and always be in the first half, so my teammates just found me, I sprinted down the floor to make it easier in transition. My teammates gave me great confidence, to just put the first half behind me and just move forward” says Liberty forward, Charles “… It was a great team win. Everyone had something to do with the win tonight” she continues.

Liberty forward, Swin Cash talks about coming off a loss to the Washington Mystics, and how they prepared for the game against the Fever. “One thing I think helped us is, we came in on Monday and had a really good practice. I think the intensity we had in practice really helped us in this game, especially in the second half, we were able to take it to another level. Everyone responded, the players, the starters, and the bench players, I thought everyone contributed today.”

The Liberty are hoping to hand the Phoenix Mercury their second loss of the season, the Liberty, go into Thursday night’s game with a 2-1 record.
