EAST RUTHERFORD, NJ- The Jets played host to the Indianapolis Colts in their preseason opener at MetLife Stadium Thursday night. Both teams looked ready to go in warmups. It showed with the high intensity that the game was being played at for a first preseason game. Andrew Luck got one series, and looked sharp in doing so. He showed great command of the offense, leaving right where he left off last year. The no huddle offense was effective, as he drove them all the way to inside the 5 yard line. He hit his favorite target TY Hilton 4 times for 42 yards. The drive was halted however by a botched snap, which made the Colts have to settle for a field goal.

Daniel Herron was a huge bright spot for the Colts. When Matt Hasslebeck took over for Luck, Herron was a major contributor. He had six catches for 36 yards, as well as seven rushes for 26 yards. On the Colts lone touchdown drive, aside from a 45 yard catch from Da’Rick Rogers, Herron accounted for every yard. This includes a 12 yard TD reception which put the Colts up 10-3.

Geno Smith led 2 drives of his own, and was able to pick up 3 first downs. One of those first downs he scrambled for on a 2nd and 8, when his pass protection failed him.  He hit his newly acquired target Eric Decker a total of 2 times for 12 yards. Chris Ivory looked good as he ran the ball hard, but left the game due to a ribs injury. In the press conference following the game, Rex Ryan confirmed that the injury was minor and that he should be fine.

Mike Vick took over on the Jets third offensive series. They showed a nice look of both Vick and Chris Johnson running the read option. Johnson was running hard and looked healthy. Vick was able to lead a touchdown drive that lasted 7:06. During this series, Vick was able to scramble 15 yards for a first down. He also was able to convert on 4th down inside the red zone. He hit Tommy Bohanon for a six yard pass, just a play after scrambling 4 yards to make the 4th down manageable. Johnson then capped off the drive with a 1 yard touchdown run, which tied the game 10-10.

The 2nd half was not nearly as exciting as the first. Both teams were playing with their 3rd string quarterbacks, and the action displayed that. Both teams were scoreless all 2nd half, until the Jets kicked the go ahead field goal with a little over a minute to go.

The Jets defense was very impressive. They were gang tackling, as well as not missing tackles. Dee Milliner looked especially good, locking up the Colts receivers. He had a nice pass breakup in the end zone, which Rex Ryan in his press conference said he thought should have been caught. The Jets defense provided the game’s only turnover with under a minute left in the 4th quarter. They got a strip sack which was recovered and led to two kneel-downs to win the game.

The Jets looked good in their preseason opener, but there is still some kinks that need to be worked out. However moving forward, they have a lot to feel good about going back to practice. Preseason or not, a win is always good. Their next preseason test will be against the Bengals in Cincinnati August 16th.
