Jets sign Ed Reed

Rex Ryan made it loud and clear that he wanted Ed Reed to join the Jets. A day and a half later, Rex Ryan got his wish as the Jets announced today that they have agreed to a deal (terms not known at this point), and Reed even took to the practice field.

Ryan was Reed’s defensive coordinator at Baltimore from 2002-2008. This is yet another ex-Raven defensive player that Ryan was able to bring to his new team in New York. While Reed’s play has started to drop over the past couple of seasons (most notably this season), Reed is a true warrior and if he thinks he can still compete at a high level, then he deserves the benefit of the doubt with all he has accomplished.

The Jets’ medical staff conducted numerous tests, and deemed that Reed was healthy enough to sign. With the Jets competing for the division as well as having a 1-game lead in the Wild Card standings, this move could loom large if they want to make a run come January. Reed will bolster the Jets secondary who is currently ranked 24th in opponents passing yards per game with an average of 251.

The Jets staff has said that Reed will be available for this Sunday’s pivotal game against the Buffalo Bills. It is not sure if he starts alongside Duwan Landry (teammates in Baltimore) or if he will be used as the number 3 safety behind second-year safety Antonio Allen.
