FLORHAM PARK, N.J. – The New York Jets have had an entertaining training camp, with plenty of story lines to follow. All training camp, the big question was if the Jets would keep all four quarterbacks on their final roster. However once the final cuts were made, there was some surprise as to who actually got cut outside of the quarterback position. Here are some of the notable cuts made by the Jets, and the breakdown by position.

Quarterback:

  • All four quarterbacks were retained on the roster, which was by surprise to many. This move speaks not only to this year, but more for how the Jets are moving for the future. Ryan Fitzpatrick is the answer now, but New York now has a solid young nucleus of quarterbacks. Bryce Petty and Christian Hackenberg have each shown bright spots, and Geno Smith still has shown some promise. It will be interesting to see if Fitzpatrick goes down to injury, which quarterback will get the call to step up.

Running Back:

  • Antone Smith and Tommy Bohanon were among the backs that were cut. The Jets have a talented running back core with Matt Forte and Bilal Powell. Smith showed glimpses of what he could do, but it just wasn’t enough consistently to earn a roster spot. Bohanon’s cut was a little surprising, but the Jets retain a good fullback in Julian Howsare.

  • Bryson Keeton, Kevin Short, Darryl Morris, and Dee Milliner were the notable cuts at the defensive back position. Milliner has to be the most interesting cut, because he never got to reach his potential due to injury. Milliner in training camp seemed poised to have a strong comeback year, injury-free. The former Alabama defensive back, was a first round pick by New York back in 2013. Milliner has been riddled with injuries throughout his career. The Jets having a deep, talented secondary this year did not help Milliner.

Tight End:

  • Zach Sudfeld, Wes Saxton, and Jace Amaro were the tight ends to get cut by New York. Sudfeld showed his ball security and catching issues, so his cut was not as surprising. Amaro was a second round pick of the Jets back in 2014, and was looking to rebound off a disappointing 2015 season. The entire 2015 season was missed by Amaro due to a torn shoulder labrum. The Tennessee Titans took no time in claiming Amaro after the Jets cut him.

Wide Receiver:

  • Jeremy Ross, Kenbrell Thompkins, and Chandler Worthy were the wide receivers to be cut from the Jets roster Saturday. All three players that were cut showed, great things this training camp. This position had the fiercest competition, and some great receivers emerged out of the ones that were kept. Most notably was Robbie Anderson and Jalin Marshall. The Jets should be set at the receiver position for years to come.
