EAST RUTHERFORD- The Jets were the home team, as the welcomed the team they share MetLife Stadium, the Giants, for a Friday night preseason game. Eli Manning and the Giants came out of the gate running the no huddle offense. They were able to convert on a 1st down but were then halted by the Jets defense. Antonio Allen had a pass break-up to force the tough 3rd down, even though the ball was well under thrown and he was beat.

Geno started off his first drive with a nice 15 yard completion to Jace Amaro, but then the Jets offense was halted after only picking up a single 1st down. Smith overthrew Decker on 3rd down over the middle. The Jets were doing a good job of stopping the run early, and limiting Rashad Jennings yards after contact. However as the game progressed, Jennings started to turn it on. He finished with 13 carries for 67 yards, including a tough 23 yard run.

Kyle Wilson had a pass interference called on him on a 3rd down that could have got them off the field. Darren Walls had a nice jump on a ball thrown to Rueben Randle, but then dropped the pick. Rueben Randle the next play makes a long catch for 26 yards.

Jason Babin will make the Coples talks interesting. He had a nice strip sack on Manning. He looked 100% out there on the field. He was very active and will make a strong case for playing time during the regular season. Coples looked strong as well; he had a nice tackle for loss to make a 3rd and long.

Another bright spot for the Jets was seeing Chris Johnson running hard. He was running between the tackles and running through tackles which was good to see. He had 9 carries for 42 yards, and had 2 catches for 35 yards as well. He looked real good in the read option, one of which for 17 yards. Chris Ivory had a nice 23 yard run off a screen pass. Could’ve had a TD, but he stepped out of bounds.

On the Jets second drive, Smith had a nice completion to Eric Decker for a 27 yard catch. The combination looked good early, aside from one that Decker had in the end zone. It was a drop that he couldn’t control through the ground. Smith led them down the field but could not punch it in. The Jets had to settle for a FG and go up 3-0.

Jace Amaro looked good in the reps that he was on the field. He had a 1 yard TD catch off the play action at the goal line on the Jets third offensive series of the game. That put the Jets up 10-0.

Muhammad Wilkerson had a nice chase down strip sack, which wasn’t recovered. It was on a play where Manning should have thrown it away but was trying to make a play.

The Jets defense looking tired on the last drive of 1st half. They were missing tackles and Victor Cruz torched the Jets secondary. He ended with 4 catches for 61 yards, and was targeted 7 times. Randle made a 15 yard TD catch on 3rd down to cap an impressive drive by the Giants with :05 seconds left in the half. The score made it 10-7 in the Jets favor.

In Vick’s two series of action, he fumbled a snap and couldn’t make the hand off to Chris Johnson which was then lost to the Giants. The Giants capitalized off the turnover when Henry Hynoski caught a play action pass for a 3 yard TD reception. Vick would answer right back by driving the Jets down the field. He hit Decker in the end zone for a slant for a 3 yard TD reception. That score put the Jets up 17-14, and would be the last series for Vick.

Brandon Dixon got burnt really bad by Preston Parker for a 39 yard TD reception thrown by Giants backup Ryan Nassib. This was the tale in the 2nd half as the Jets defense did not look nearly as good as they did in the 1st half. The Jets eventually lost the game 35-24.

The Jets gave up 28 2nd half points, and its very hard to win games when you do that. They have some issues to solve in the secondary and it showed on many instances. The Jets offense however, did look like they are coming together. They’ve shown an explosive running game with backs Chris Johnson and Chris Ivory. It’s made it easier for Smith to throw the ball, but he needs another receiver to emerge besides Decker.

When asked what he thought he needed to improve on after the game Friday night, Smith responded “everything … I need to work on everything to become better. Everyday I want to try and get better.” This is the attitude that the Jets need out of their starting QB and look to take with them into Philly against the Eagles Thursday night. This will be the Jets final preseason tuneup before opening against the Oakland Raiders, September 7th at MetLife Stadium.
