Jets Chargers Week 5 Preview

ByBarry Holmes

Oct 5, 2014

The Jets go into San Diego to play the Chargers who are on a three game win streak, and have Philip Rivers who is arguably the front runner for the MVP thus far. Rivers has the highest passer rating in the NFL. He adds to that 1155 yards passing with 9 touchdowns and just 1 interception. Rivers has his Chargers owning the 5th best passing attack in the league with 282.3 yards per game. He has had to make up for losing his security blanket in Danny Woodhead who is lost for the year due to injury.

Eddie Royal, Antonio Gates, and Keenan Allen have evenly picked up the slack by each having over 200 yards receiving. Malcom Floyd has played well too, adding 2 touchdowns on 187 yards receiving. This wide receiver core is explosive and consistent. Royal is coming off two straight multiple touchdown games. The Jets secondary will need to have a strong game, or they will be exposed. Each wide out on the Chargers has the ability to beat their man, and the opportunities will be there with how Rivers spreads the ball around.

The Chargers rushing attack has been non existent, with Woodhead going down to injury for the year. Donald Brown and Ryan Matthews have been less than stellar in picking up the workload. Brown has just 100 yards on 50 carries, and Matthews has 23 rushes for 71 yards on the year. With how strong the Jets front line has been in stopping the run, I wouldn’t expect much from the run game today. The Jets own the top rushing defense in the league, limiting teams to just 63.3 yards per game.

Geno Smith will need to have a mistake free game on the road here on Sunday. He has thrown an interception in every game in the season, and that just will not help you to win games. He also will need to make the right decisions and the correct run reads to increase their dismal red zone efficiency. All year the Jets have struggled to punch it in, and have had to settle for field goals. Field goals will not cut it against this high powered Chargers offense. Look for the Jets prized rushing attack to make an impact early, and slow the game down to keep Rivers off the field. This will also get Smith in rhythm and hopefully take care of the football.

Prediction: Geno Smith on the road will not be able to take care of the football, nor out shoot Rivers in a shootout in San Diego. The secondary is exposed yet again this week
