EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. – The New York Giants (0-4) have not lived up to the big expectations that were set for them this season. Many people had this team as the favorite to win the NFC East. Currently, this Giants team doesn’t even look like they could make a playoff appearance. The pressure is definitely on Coach Ben McAdoo, to right this ship and do it fast.

Luckily, New York will face the struggling Los Angeles Chargers (0-4) at MetLife Stadium this Sunday. This is the perfect match-up for the Giants to gain some confidence, and finally scratch the win column. Here are three things New York needs to do, so that they don’t fall to (0-5) this season:

Don’t Go For It on 4th Down!

  • It is very encouraging when your coach shows he has confidence in your offense. The problem is when you leave the offense out there on 4th down, and they fail to convert consistently. New York has converted just 1 out of 6 tries on 4th down. This has especially hurt them the last two games against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Philadelphia Eagles. Both games Coach McAdoo elected to go for it on 4th down, instead of kicking a field goal. This proved to be critical, as both Tampa Bay and Philadelphia won with last second field goals. With a Giants’ team that is struggling to put points on the board, you have to take the sure points when they come.

Sure Up Sloppy Tackling

  • The Giants are usually known for their tough, hard nosed defense. This season, New York has had an uncharacteristic problem with broken tackles. The Giants are allowing defenders to shed arm tackles, and get yards after the catch. New York ranks just 21st in the NFL in tackles, and 20th in assisted tackles. The tackling has become especially challenging on 3rd down, and in the second half of games. If the Giants can’t fix their tackling issues, the defense is going to stay on the field for much longer. A tired defense is a recipe for disaster.

Give the Rookie a Shot!

  • Last game, Paul Perkins got injured and was replaced by rookie Wayne Gallman. Gallman finished with 11 carries for 42 yards and a touchdown reception. The rookie out of Clemson was a bright spot in a struggling Giants’ run game. Gallman did a great job of running hard between the tackles, and consistently getting positive yards. That is exactly what the Giants need, because they can’t abandon the run game. Eli Manning has for years lived off the play action pass. This season Manning hasn’t been able to utilize the play action much, because teams are not afraid of the rushing attack. Give Gallman the ball, and let’s see if the youngster can revitalize this struggling run game.
