After a miserable week in Chicago the New York Mets came home for a start of a seven game home stand. The Mets sent out the Veteran right hander Bartolo Colon on Friday night. It was a start to forget about for Mr. Colon, as he got smacked around by the Brewers as he gave up (6) runs on (7) hits in (5) innings of work. Terry Collins had to make an early call to the bullpen, and brought in Alex Torres, and gave Collins (2) innings of work and only allowed (1) hit. Collins then went to Carlos Torres who pitched (1) inning and allowed (1) run in his outing. The final pitcher that came out of the bullpen was Sean Gilmartin who gave an inning without allowing either a hit or run. It was a rough game all-around, as the Mets were trailing (5-0) in the third inning. From that point on, the Brewers kept on going and cruised their way onto a (7-0) win; as the Mets were only able to bang out (3) hits.
The Mets finally snapped their (5) game losing streak on Saturday May 16th, as the Mets got a laugher of a win pounding the Brewers to a (14-1) victory. The Mets sent out their rookie of the year right-hander Jacob deGrom and was looking to bounce back from a rough outing on Monday May 11th against the Chicago Cubs. deGrom received plenty of offensive support, including from himself as he went (3-3) with an R.B.I. single. deGrom went a strong (6) innings, as he struck out (6) batters, walked (1) batter; and only allowed (1) run. Terry Collins went to his bullpen and brought in Erik Goeddel and pitched (2) innings of relief and only allowed (1) hit. Collins then went to Jack Leathersich and pitched an inning of relief, and sealed the (14-1) victory over the Brewers.
On Sunday May 17th marked the Citi Field debut for Noah Syndergaard as he was looking to pick up his first big-league win. Syndergaard did his job to help give himself the best chance to win the game. Right from the start he seemed extra pumped up as his Fastball was flying. His Fastball reached up to (98 mph). He was cruising along until he got himself in trouble in the 6th inning for his second straight game. It all started once he beamed Brewers All-Star Center Fielder Carlos Gomez right on the helmet. It was a scary scene as the training staff was giving Gomez a full concession examination on the field which took a good 5-10 minutes. Before the game analyst were saying that Syndergaard needs to pitch inside, and he did exactly just that. Once he hit Gomez on the helmet he started to pitch outside. Ryan Braun kept spoiling Syndergaard’s pitches, until Braun finally took his outside pitch the other way to right field for an R.B.I. single. That turned out to be the only run Syndergaard gave up in his (6) innings of work. The Mets bullpen has been pretty busy the last week, as Collins went to Sean Gilmartin, Carlos Torres, Hansel Robles; and Jeurys Familia who all helped secure Noah’s first major league win. The pitching wasn’t just the story in today’s game. One of the biggest pieces to the Mets offense is Eric Campbell who batted second in the lineup, and had a great day at the plate. Campbell went (2-3) and scored (2) runs. Mets veteran outfielder Michael Cuddyer is starting to come around again, as he went (1-4); but that one hit was a two run single. Curtis Granderson set the tempo off early with a lead off homerun in the first inning. That marked Granderson’s (30th) career leadoff home run and his (4th) of the season. After a solid performance by Noah Syndergaard, and the offensive supply helped lead the Mets to a (5-1) victory; and took two out of three from the Brewers.
Following an outstanding performance by Noah Syndergaard the Mets sent out Matt Harvey for the first game of a four game series against the best team in Baseball the St. Louis Cardinals. Harvey had an outstanding game as he pitched eight shutout innings, while Cardinals pitcher John Lackey only gave up one run in seven innings of work. Terry Collins went to his closer Jeurys Familia, and wasted an excellent performance by Harvey as he blew the save in the ninth inning. The Mets were able to get the bats together late in extra innings, as Terry Collins went to his bench and had John Mayberry Jr. pinch hit and got a walkoff R.B.I. single in the fourteenth inning.
The second game of the four game series wasn’t a game to remember for the Mets and Jon Niese to remember. Niese went five innings, and in his five innings of work he gave up eight runs; and struck out one batter. The Mets scored only two runs, which was a two-run home run that came off the bat of Daniel Murphy in the bottom of the fourth inning. The Mets ended up losing the game by a final score of (10-2).
The third game didn’t get any better for the Mets as they ended up losing by a final score of (9-0). The Mets sent out their opening day starter Bartolo Colon and was a start for him to forget about as he went (4.1) innings and gave up nine runs, and eight of the runs were earned runs. The one positive note from this game was the bullpen didn’t give up any runs.
The Mets were able to end their seven game homestand on a positive note with a victory, and a split of a four game series over the St. Louis Cardinals. For the second straight start in a row, Jacob deGrom had an outstanding game; as he went eight innings and struck out eleven batters without allowing a walk. In his eight innings of work deGrom only allowed one hit. Terry Collins went to his bullpen and brought in Jeurys Familia in the ninth inning, and sealed the victory for the Mets and deGrom. Both deGrom and Familia combined to pitch a two hit shutout, as the Mets went on to win by a final score of (5-0).
Since the Washington Nationals had the day off, the Mets will remain in second place in the National League East. The Mets will now head back on the road and take on the Pittsburgh Pirates before coming back home for another six game homestand starting with the Philadelphia Phillies and ending with the Miami Marlins.
