January 10, 2016, New York City, Lionel Hollins’ time with the Brooklyn Nets has come to an end as he was fired by the team’s front office. Nets General Manager Billy King has been reassigned from his position with the team. For the time being, Nets assistant coach Tony Brown will take over as head coach.

Hollins was in the middle of his second season as head coach with the Brooklyn Nets until being fired this afternoon. During his time with the Nets, Hollins has posted a record of 38-44. In his first season as head coach of the Nets, he took them to the first round of the playoffs only to fall short to the top seed in the Eastern Conference, Atlanta Hawks, in six games.

The 2015-2016 season has not been kind to Hollins and the Nets as they currently sit in second to last place with a record of 10-27. Only the Philadelphia 76ers have a lower record with a 4-35 record.

Nets owner Mikhail Prokhorov released a statement on the decision: “After careful consideration, I’ve concluded that it’s time for a fresh start and a new vision for the direction of the team. By making this decision now, it enables our organization to use the rest of the season to diligently evaluate candidates with proven track records. It’s clear from our current state of affairs that we need new leadership. With the right  basketball management and coach in place, we are going to create a winning culture and identity, and give Brooklyn a team that it can be proud of and enjoy watching. We have learned a great deal the past six years and our experience will guide us for the future. Following the consolidation of team ownership last month, I can assure you that I’m more determined and committed than ever to build a winner. I want to thank Billy for his hard work in the development of the Nets. At every step of the way, he has been aggressive in his quest to be a factor toward the Nets making the playoffs for each of the past three seasons. Beyond this, he has been a tremendous friend, wonderful colleague, and a loyal partner, and we wish him success in the future. I also want to thank Lionel for his efforts and dedication on behalf of the Nets franchise. To our fans, I thank you for your continued enthusiasm and support, and please know that brighter days are ahead. I’m excited to begin the process of choosing the best GM and head coach available.”

The announcement of Hollins firing, and Billy King’s reassigning was made after the Nets 103-89 blowout loss to the Detroit Pistons. The Nets will be back in action tomorrow as the Brooklyn Nets will host the San Antonio Spurs before the Battle of New York on Wednesday as the Nets will host the New York Knicks, and will end their home stand on Friday with a matchup with the Portland Trailblazers.
