The New York Mets and The Washington Nationals were back at it again on Wednesday night for game 2 of the series as the Mets tried to bounce back after their opening day loss. Bartolo Colon took the mound in his Mets debut, going head to head with Washington’s Gio Gonzales.

Bartolo Colon would get off to a solid start in this game as he retired 10 of the first 11 batters he faced.

Bottom of the 1st, Juan Lagares continues his blazing hot start to the season with a leadoff triple to right center. Wilmer Flores is up second, he pops out to short stop. David Wright up third, he smacks a sac-fly to right field, Lagares scores, Mets take an early lead 1-0.

Moving on to the top of the 4th, Jayson Werth with a 1-out double into the corner in right field. Adam LaRoche follows up with a double of his own to left, Werth would score, game tied up at 1.

Top of the 5th, Ian Desmond leads off the inning with a solo home run to left center field, Nats take their first lead of the game, 2-1. Jose Lobaton lines out to center but Nationals pitcher Gio Gonzales is up next and you won’t believe what he does. Gonzalez jumps all over a pitch from Bartolo Colon and hits a home run off the top of the wall in left center. Nationals lead 3-1.

Top of the 7th, Gonzalez Germen is on in relief for Bartolo Colon. He starts the inning by surrendering a double off the wall in right field to Denard Span. Anthony Rendon is up next and he follows up with another double off the base of the wall in center field. Span bafflingly only advances to third and does not score on the play. Runners on second and third, Gonzalez Germen throws a wild pitch to the backstop that Travis d’Arnaud should have caught over his head but simply did not get the glove on, Span scores, Nats up 4-1 now. Germen would then settle down and retire the next 6 batters he faced, striking out 3 of them.

Top of the 9th, Kyle Farnsworth on in relief for the Mets. Span continues his impressive showing, lacing a 1-out triple to right field. Span goes on to score when the next batter Anthony Rendon grounds out to short stop. Nationals take a 5-1 lead and they would not relinquish it.

Craig Stammen on in relief for the Nationals in the bottom of the 9th and he disposes of the Mets 1-2-3 to end the game. The Mets fall to 0-2 and the season, Nationals improve to 2-0. Gio Gonzalez picks up his first win to improve to 1-0, Bartolo Colon picks up to loss to fall to 0-1.

The Mets struck out 13 times in the game and have struck out an astonishing 31 times in their first 2 games of the season.
