FLORHAM PARK, N.J. – The second week of training camp, has come to a close Saturday for the New York Jets. There has been no shortage of excitement and competition to open the 2016 NFL season. Here are four of the biggest takeaways from this week.

1) Ryan Fitzpatrick dons a new hairstyle

  • The Jets have patiently waited and negotiated to have their bearded gunslinger back under center. However, this week, Fitzpatrick decided to buzz his hair. The new hairstyle may take some time to get used to, but at least fans can know that the beard was left untouched.
  • Rookie cornerback, Juston Burris got to buzz Fitzpatrick’s hair, after intercepting him the day prior. Fitzpatrick had told his defense whoever picked him off first, would get to do the honors.

2) Darrelle Revis at Safety?

  • There has been a lot of talk that has surfaced after an WFAN interview with Revis last Thursday. Revis was quoted saying, “There’s probably a conversation in the future regarding me maybe moving my position, maybe to safety or doing some other things.”
  • Coach Todd Bowles was quick to shoot down the comments, saying he had not had a conversation to Revis about the position switch. Bowles went on to say, “I see him (Revis) playing corner right now. I don’t see the future. Right now, it’s is the present.” Jets fans should be assured that Revis will be playing cornerback for Gang Green.

3) Revis vs Brandon Marshall

  • Revis and Marshall were involved in a training camp scuffle last Friday. Marshall took an open hand slap at Revis, which didn’t connect. Jets staff and players quickly broke the scuffle up shortly after.
  • The two are known for being passionate trash talkers, and Friday was a culmination of just that. If you have seen HBO’s Hard Knocks before, you would know that training camp fights happen frequently. This a part of the competition of football, and Coach Bowles voiced his appreciation for the competitiveness. Although he did say that, “you have to keep it clean.”
  • This was our first real glimpse of Revis participating at game speed, and he battled Marshall all afternoon. Revis looked good and his legs looked healthy. Seeing the fire and competitiveness behind his altercation with Marshall, is encouraging to see and sets the tone for training camp. The Jets as a whole, have not lacked in the intensity department this training camp.

4) Matt Forte still sidelined

  • Forte signed with the Jets in the off-season for three years and $12 million ($8 million guaranteed). Forte has yet to practice with New York, after injuring his hamstring. This happened while Forte was training on his own, prior to the start of training camp.
  • Forte needs to get healthy, as he is going to be looked on to carry this Jet rushing attack. Reps are crucial towards getting game ready, and reps can’t be made from the sideline.
  • Coach Bowles said in his press conference after practice Thursday, that Forte more than likely will miss their first preseason game. New York will be matched up against the Jacksonville Jaguars in MetLife Stadium Aug.11 in that contest.

Jet Under The Radar:

  • Rookie Jalin Marshall (5-10, 200 lbs) out of Ohio State, has been turning some heads this week. Marshall has shown exceptional hands and good route running abilities in practice. Look to see Marshall make some plays on offense in the Jets’ preseason opener.
