Wright Fuels 9th Inning Rally – Mets Win!

In what was one of the biggest games of the season, the New York Mets defeated the Philadelphia Phillies 6-5.  All-Star pitching was supposed to highlight the game,  but hitting was on display as the Mets used a late ninth inning rally to overcome the Phillies.  R.A. Dickey (12-1, 2.40 ERA) faced off against Cole Hamels (10-4, 3.20 ERA) in this much-anticipated pitching matchup.  In the end, neither of these pitchers would factor into the decision.

R.A. Dickey struggled to get into a good rhythm. He surrendered 5 runs and gave up 11 hits through seven innings.  Cole Hamels pitched seven innings, giving up 4 runs and 7 hits.  On the offensive side, the Mets were led by David Wright who went 3-5 with a homerun and 4 RBI’s.  Scott Hairston also helped out, going 1-3 with another homerun.

The Phillies went into the ninth with a 5-4 lead and their closer Jonathan Papelbon on the mound.  He gave up a lead off a double to Ike Davis, who was then moved to third on a bunt by Josh Thole.  Kirk Nieuwenhuis then struck out.  With 2 outs and a man on third Jordany Valdespin was hit by a pitch and Ruben Tejada walked to load the bases.  Daniel Murphy was next and hit a comebacker to Papelbon, which bounced of his leg and led the tying run to score. David Wright came up and hit a bloop single to win the game and the series for the Mets.  Chants of “MVP” came from the fans after Wright’s big game.

This was a huge series win for the Mets. Next up, the Mets take on the Chicago Cubs. This is the last series before the All-Star Game.  Speaking of the All-Star game, the Mets will be represented by R.A. Dickey and David Wright.
