NEW YORK CITY, N.Y.- The St. John’s Red Storm lost a overtime thriller to the Seton Hall Pirates 81-74 inside Madison Square Garden. The game went down to the wire, featuring several ties and lead changes. Khadeen Carrington led Seton Hall with 22 points, 6 rebounds and 4 assists. Shamorie Ponds scored a game high 25 points to go along with 6 assists and 2 rebounds.

Track-meet throughout The Game

The game had a fast pace throughout as both teams were getting up and down the court. St. John’s was aggressive on defense, trapping and double teaming to make life difficult for Seton Hall. That wouldn’t deter the Pirates though, as they weathered the storm (no pun intended.)

The entire team stepped up in the absence of one of their best players, Desi Rodriguez. Five players scored in double figures for the Pirates. Seton Hall made a living in the paint, going to center Angel Delgado early and late in the game. He finished the game with 14 points and 13 rebounds, his 70th career double double. When asked about his play despite nagging injuries, Delgado wouldn’t be denied. “I am a warrior. I am not letting my team down because something hurts. I am always there and ready to play.”

Red Storm Woes

Many factors led to the downfall of St. John’s. Outside of Ponds, and Marvin Clark II, their weren’t many contributors throughout the game. St. John’s got into foul trouble early in the second half, committing 5 team fouls. That set the table for Seton Hall to attack the basket late in the game.

A couple of questionable foul calls late in the game, including on Clark and Owens spelled doom for the red storm. Coach Chris Mullin didn’t have much to say after the game on those calls. “You drill and talk situations and the game flows and then those things happen.

For the Red Storm, this was not the way they wanted to kick off this two game home stand. The Pirates did not give up anything easy, especially late in the second half and overtime. St. John’s forward Marvin Clark II spoke about Seton Hall’s late game defense. “They zoned us, the zone kind of got to us. Even though we scored, it kind of game us a little bit of trouble.”

Coach. Mullin certainly hopes his team can play with more poise and energy in their next game against Butler. With practice and a couple of days off, we shall see how the johnnies respond to a tough loss such as this.
