New York Islanders Feeling the Blues

New York Islanders 1 St. Louis Blues 5 F

Coming into the game having allowed 21 power play goals and with the St. Louis Blues having netted 19 of their goals on the man advantage, it seemed that the recipe for a New York Islanders win would have been to stay out of the penalty box. However, the Isles were unsuccessful in doing so. Defenseman Jay Bouwmeester gave the Blues an early 1-0 lead in the first period, after he sent a slap shot home past goalie Anders Nilsson from the top of the zone. The goal came with Thomas Vanek serving a two minute penalty for interference.

Andrew MacDonald brought the Islanders even with his own power play goal 5:19 into the second period. This was the only goal of the night for the visitors, who have now lost eight straight. Less than two minutes later, with Matt Carkner having been assessed a two minute penalty for instigating a fight with Chris Stewart, Derek Roy put the Blues ahead 2-1. In the middle of a succession of three goals within eight minutes, David Backes got in on the act as well, netting a power play goal on assists from Alexander Steen and Kevin Shattenkirk. Capping off the string of goals in the second period for the Blues, Magnus Paajarvi picked up his second goal of the season. Brenden Morrow concluded the scoring at 13:19 of the third period.

The Islanders will play for the second time on a five game road trip on Saturday night at 10:30 pm against the Los Angeles Kings.
