FLORHAM PARK, N.J. – The New York Jets have had a great training camp thus far, and Tuesday afternoon that trend continued.

The Jets have had interesting position battles throughout camp. The one that’s been highlighted, has been who will step into the third receiver role behind Brandon Marshall and Eric Decker. Marshall was not at practice Tuesday, and Coach Todd Bowles told the media that his absence was excused. Bowles also noted that the absence was not disciplinary.

This led to some other receivers getting first team reps. Kenbrell Thompkins looked good, and has shown good hands. Thompkins has done a good job of catching balls, and catching them in traffic. Jeremy Ross has also shown spurts of greatness. Ross had a really nice over-the-shoulder catch on a deep pass from Christian Hackenberg.

Hackenberg has done well considering the four quarterback situation, and receiving limited reps. The deep throw to Ross is an example of one of Hackenberg’s best upsides. His arm strength and down field accuracy has been showcased, but the problems have been when he’s experienced pressure. That all comes with reps, and at the moment there just isn’t enough to go around.

Juston Burris has had a good training camp, but has been known for how many dropped interceptions he’s had. Both the media and players have spoken about how Burris seems to always be in good position, but can’t come up with the pick. Tuesday there was a goal line situation, where Ryan Fitzpatrick had made a throw that Burris broke on perfectly. The ball was in Burris’ hands and he dropped it to the dismay of many. If Burris can catch more of those opportunities, he may see more opportunities.

Matt Forte has been another person that has been continuously discussed at training camp. Forte has participated in individual drills, but has yet to see time in team drills. However, the veteran has spoken reassurance that he will be ready for Week 1.
