Jets Bears Week 3 Preview

ByBarry Holmes

Sep 22, 2014

The New York Jets play host to the Chicago Bears in tonight’s Monday Night Football matchup. The Jets are coming off of a tough road loss in Green Bay, in which they gave up an 18 point lead. Chicago is coming off an impressive comeback win over the San Francisco 49ers in the opening game of their new stadium. Both teams are sitting with a 1-1 record, and looking to turn the page in the right direction for the rest of the season.

Jay Cutler has played well so far to start the 2014 season. He is tied with Peyton Manning for most TD passes so far (6). The gunslinger only has 2 interceptions to go with that, to bring him to a passer rating of 99.7. Cutler will be looking to take advantage of the New York Jets secondary which hasn’t looked its strongest. His receiving core headlined by Brandon Marshall and Alshon Jeffery. The tandem has combined for 21 receptions, 237 yards and 4 touchdowns (all from Marshall).

Nothing else new in the rushing game, Matt Forte is dealing his usual punishment on would be tacklers. He has 29 attempts and 103 yards in the two games of the season. He has yet to see the end zone this year, which very well could change tonight. Martellus Bennett has provided a nice boost as well for the Bears offense. He has 2 touchdowns and 107 yards receiving thus far. The bright spot for the Bears as well has been the play of Kyle Fuller. He is 2nd on the team in tackles (12) and tied with Chris Conti for team leader in interceptions (2). He will look to take advantage of any Geno Smith mistake, trying to fit balls into tight windows.

For the Jets to come away with a victory, they will need a spirited performance from their secondary. With Dee Milliner doubtful, Rex Ryan will need help from Antonio Allen and Darren Walls who have at times looked good, but lack the consistency. Muhammad Wilkerson and Sheldon Richardson were both fined recently for their part in the Green Bay brawl, will look to take their frustrations out on the Bears offensive line. They were very disruptive on Aaron Rodgers in the 1st half of the Week 2 contest and look to keep it rolling. Quinton Coples has looked healthy this year as well, and should so his job in trying to stop the Bears rushing attack.

Prediction: Geno Smith ultimately will be the deciding factor. Can under the bright lights, he match the level of play of his counterpart Jay Cutler, on the national stage at MetLife Stadium. If he can protect his rushing attack of Chris Ivory and Chris Johnson and make good decisions without turning the ball over, the Jets faithful will go home happy. Jets win a close one
