According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, there’s concern that Pierre-Paul could miss the start of the regular season due to a hand injury that was a result of a fireworks accident that took place over the July Fourth weekend. It has been reported that the team is still awaiting more medical information, but his availability for Week One against the Cowboys is in doubt. It’s a murky situation for the Giants defensive end, who led the team with 12.5 sacks last season.

Pierre-Paul who has been looking for a long term contract offer from the Giants didn’t help his cause this time around with reports of possible nerve damage and burns. At the same time he has not yet signed the one-year franchise tag tender that will pay him $14.8 million for the 2015 season, a situation that kept him away from the team for almost the entire offseason.

Pierre-Paul is the only established pass rusher on the team, and proved to be one of the only reliable Gmen against the run last year. After a bounce back season he put himself in a great position for contract talks entering the season, but now it looks as if he will be lucky to even start week one. Training camp is only a few weeks away and it looks like the defensive pass rushers just became an even more interesting group to watch closely this summer.
