Bronx N.Y. It is dubbed the subway series perhaps the greatest series in the MLB and the clash of two titans, the Ney York Mets vs The New York Yankees. Never before had the Mets and Yankees squared off with both teams being first in their respective division. The hype for this subway series was equal to the first subway series back in 1997 if not even better. The Mets came in streaking looking like the boys of 1986 (WS Champs) having tied a franchise best with 11 straight wins and starting (13-3). Everything seemed to be clicking for the Mets they left a 10 game home stand at 10-0 the first time in franchise history. It was a feat so remarkable that it was not accomplished in the Mets previous homes which were at the Polo Grounds, Shea Stadium or Citi Field. During that stretch, the Mets outscored opponents 53-28, batted .272 with seven homers and pitched to a 2.70 ERA.

The Yankees did not start off so great when they were (3-6) to start the season. Their only bright spot was A-Rod and his 4HR’s and 11RBI’s. But since that horrendous start to the season the Yankees have seemed to get back on track having won six of their last seven games coming into tonight. You can never count the Yankees coming into tonight the Yankees lead the league in HR’s and were second in walks only to the team across town the Mets. The Mets have made a living out of playing small ball this season. On the other hand the Yankees continue to use that short porch in right field and their predominately left handed hitters to use the long ball to their advantage.

Jacob DeGrom came into tonight’s game having pitched 18 and 1/3 scoreless innings streak that was immediately broken in the bottom of the first by Mark (text message) Teixeira. Although he came into tonight’s game batting .176 on the season his 12 hits have all been for extra bases 5 doubles and now 7 HR’s. In the bottom of the first he was able to hook one just before the foul pole for a two run shot over the short porch in right field. Teixeira was not finished doing the same exact thing on what looked to be another mistake by DeGrom and the rookie catcher Plawecki. Ellsbury hit a solo shot that inning to make it 5-0 and Stephen Drew had a sac fly to bring in Brian McCann. All six runs were charged to Jacob DeGrom only the second time in his short career that has occurred.

All is not lost as tomorrow is the true clash of the titans when Matt Harvey and C.C. Sabathia are scheduled to start. The Mets look to start another streak while the Yankees try to maintain theirs. It is definitely a marquee game and the fans from both sides will be watching to claim bragging rights. I hope the Mets put the bat symbol in the sky tonight cause the Dark Knight looks to tie the series tomorrow thus creating a big showdown for ESPN’s Sunday night baseball game.
