Jason Kidd, the new head coach of the Brooklyn Nets held his first round of practices over the July 4th holiday weekend. Coach Kidd also was on the sideline for his first ever head coaching action in a 76-67 loss to the Detroit Pistons in this years Summer League.

During the July 4th weeks practice, Coach Kidd told reporters that he is excited coaching in the Summer League, as it will help him get much needed on the job training. He also acknowledges that transitioning from player to coach will be difficult, and that is why he made a big push to bring his former coach, Lawrence Frank on board. He also has reached out to Mark Jackson, who made the transition from player to coach as well, and has a successful year as the Head Coach of the Golden State Warriors.

There is no doubt that Coach Kidd has earned everyone’s respect, as he is a future first ballot hall of famer, so getting the Nets to buy into what he is teaching should be no problem. During his first game as Coach in the Summer League, he let assistant coach, Lawrence Frank draw up the plays while he looked on closely.  Coach Kidd also might have taken a slight dig at the way the Knicks handled the referees this past season, as he told the media at practice he wants the Nets to take on the same philosophy he did regarding the refs, and not to complain when things do not go their way.

The Summer League should prove to be very valuable to Coach Kidd. He has been outspoken about taking a back seat, and leaning on his assistant coaches, mainly Lawrence Frank, to help him succeed. The Nets are supposed to be contenders in the Eastern Conference, and the media coverage surrounding them will feel like a playoff atmosphere all season long.
